A workable one-week Albania plan with two honest options: a scenic road trip and a simpler no-car itinerary focused on historic towns.
Seven days in Albania are enough for Tirana and two historic towns. With a hire car you can add a taste of the southern coast; without one, the most reliable plan is to concentrate on Berat and Gjirokastër rather than force an uncertain string of buses along the Riviera. This guide gives you both options, with six nights in the country and the final night in Tirana before your flight home.
This is a practical route guide, not a second copy of our general Albania travel guide. Its purpose is to answer where to sleep, when to move and what you can reasonably do each day. If your incoming flight arrives very late, or your departure flight is unusually early, remove a stop rather than squeezing connections.
Choose your route: car or public transport
| With a car | Without a car | |
|---|---|---|
| Route | Tirana → Berat → Gjirokastër → Himarë → Tirana | Tirana → Berat → Tirana → Gjirokastër → Tirana |
| Six nights | 1 Tirana, 1 Berat, 1 Gjirokastër, 2 Himarë, 1 Tirana | 2 Tirana early, 1 Berat, 2 Gjirokastër, 1 Tirana last |
| Best feature | Coast, mountain roads and flexible stopping | Historic cities without driving stress |
| Main trade-off | One substantial drive back to Tirana | Some backtracking and no beach stay |
Both are deliberate choices. The no-car route is not pretending that an unverified direct bus will be running when you need it.
Option A: seven days in Albania with a car
Day 1 – Tirana. Arrive, settle in and walk around Skanderbeg Square or the Blloku neighbourhood. Avoid beginning a long drive while tired from an early departure or late flight.
Day 2 – Berat. Drive to Berat during daylight and explore the Mangalem and Gorica quarters. Leave time for the old fortress district and stay overnight rather than driving on in the dark.
Day 3 – Gjirokastër. Continue south, allowing for slower roads, stops and local traffic. The hilltop town has steep streets and tight access, so use the parking guidance from your accommodation.
Day 4 – southern coast. Travel towards Himarë via the appropriate route for your conditions. Take time at viewpoints but do not assume that a mountain road will be as fast as a major highway. Arrive in daylight and keep the evening free.
Day 5 – Himarë. Enjoy a beach, village walk or suitable excursion without moving hotels. Check whether seasonal businesses and transport services are operating if you travel outside the main summer period.
Day 6 – return to Tirana. Reserve the entire day for the drive, breaks, fuel and vehicle return. Avoid relying on a single quoted journey duration: traffic, road conditions and detours can change the day significantly.
Day 7 – depart. Stay within convenient reach of the airport the night before. If your flight is late, enjoy a final unhurried walk in the capital.
Option B: seven days in Albania without a car
Day 1 – Tirana. Arrive, check the location of the intercity terminal and stay somewhere convenient for onward travel. Tirana's local bus stops and long-distance terminals are not interchangeable.
Day 2 – bus to Berat. Take a confirmed daytime service and explore the UNESCO-listed historic quarters. Staying overnight makes the trip much more worthwhile than a rushed day excursion.
Day 3 – Berat, then Tirana. Spend the morning in Berat and travel back to Tirana. This backtrack may look inefficient, but it avoids building your holiday around a single direct Berat–Gjirokastër departure that may not suit your date or season.
Day 4 – bus to Gjirokastër. Keep most of the day available for the intercity journey, terminal transfer and check-in. The walk from the bus stop to the historic centre can be steep, especially with luggage.
Day 5 – Gjirokastër. Visit the castle area and the bazaar and allow time to explore the old town at a slower pace. This is why the itinerary includes two nights here.
Day 6 – back to Tirana. Take a suitable confirmed daytime bus back to the capital and stay overnight. A changed bus departure should not cause you to miss an international flight the same day.
Day 7 – depart. Use a pre-checked airport transfer. This plan deliberately leaves the final morning uncomplicated.
A direct Berat–Gjirokastër bus may be possible for some dates, but public sources do not consistently agree on departures and seasonal availability. You can simplify the loop only after confirming an operator, stop and service for your actual travel day.
Albania one-week budget: two sample calculations
These are transparent planning assumptions for two people sharing a room, not an actual 2027 price survey or ticket quote. All amounts are per person in euros, without flights, insurance or shopping.
| Per-person item | No car | Hire car |
|---|---|---|
| Six nights' accommodation | €210 (€70/room/night ÷ 2) | €225 (€75/room/night ÷ 2) |
| Seven days' meals | €196 (€28/day) | €210 (€30/day) |
| Buses and local transport | €90 allowance | – |
| Six days' car hire | – | €165 (€55/car/day ÷ 2) |
| Fuel and other car costs | – | €60 (€120 total ÷ 2) |
| Sights and entry | €45 | €60 |
| Contingency | €60 | €60 |
| Sample total | €601 | €780 |
Use real offers for your dates. Some hire-car quotes exclude excess reduction, additional drivers, parking or other extras. A solo traveller booking private rooms will usually spend more per person.
Best season for a one-week route
Spring and early autumn are appealing for walking around the historic towns. The coast can be much busier in the peak summer season, while restaurants and seaside services may be more limited outside it. Expect variation between inland towns, mountains and the coast. Leave room for rain, hot days and road delays rather than assuming a perfect week of weather.
Road safety, buses and entry requirements
The Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs' Albania advice notes a different driving culture and advises against unnecessary night driving. Check your travel documents and any entry requirements with the relevant authorities before departure.
For the no-car option, current route listings include Tirana–Berat buses on GjirafaTravel and Gjirokastër regional transport information. Listings are useful starting points, not guarantees for a later date. Check the departure terminal, timetable, luggage rules and payment method before every transfer.
Frequently asked questions
Is one week enough in Albania?
Yes, for a few selected places. Tirana, Berat and Gjirokastër fit well. Add the coast only if you accept longer driving days.
Can I travel around Albania without renting a car?
Yes, especially between major towns. Bus stops and services vary, so keep plans flexible and avoid risky same-day flight connections.
Should I include Ksamil?
Not automatically. The seven-day driving route prioritises the Himarë coast; Ksamil makes more sense if you cut another stop or extend the trip.
Why spend the last night in Tirana?
It protects the international departure from a long intercity transfer and unexpected timetable changes.
