Santorini looks too good to be true in photos — and then turns out to look exactly like that in real life. A volcanic caldera, whitewashed villages on the cliff edge and black-sand beaches all fit onto an island you can drive around in a day. Choosing your village shapes the holiday more than any other decision. Caldera-rim villages give you the view and the price tag; the coast gives you space and value.

Rule of thumb: a caldera view from your balcony costs a clear premium. If you spend your days on the beach and take the bus up for sunset, Kamari or Perissa saves hundreds of euros a week.

May and September give the best mix of weather, price and crowds. In July and August, arrive at the Oia sunset at least an hour early if you want a spot at the railing.

Getting around: buses, ferries and flights
Local KTEL buses run from Fira to almost every village and beach, and a ticket typically costs a couple of euros. They fill up in summer, so leave slack in your plans. The island has very few taxis and they are hard to get in the evening — arrange transfers in advance or use your hotel's service.
A rental car or ATV is worth it for one or two days if you want to combine Akrotiri, the wineries and the remote beaches in a single day. Parking in Oia and Fira is difficult in summer.

Sights and excursions
- Akrotiri excavations — a Bronze Age town often called the Pompeii of the Aegean. It is covered, so it works on a hot day.
- Caldera hike from Fira to Oia — around 10 km and 3–4 hours. Start early, and bring shoes, water and a hat.
- Caldera boat trip — the Nea Kameni volcano, the hot springs of Palea Kameni and a stop on Thirassia.
- Wineries — crisp assyrtiko and sweet vinsanto grow in volcanic soil. A tasting tour takes a couple of hours.
- Pyrgos and Ancient Thera — the quieter interior with panoramic views and no crowds.
- Sunset without the queue — Imerovigli, Pyrgos or Skaros Rock offer the same light as Oia in peace.
A four-day itinerary
1. Day 1: arrive, explore Fira and walk the rim to Firostefani, dinner on a view terrace.
2. Day 2: morning hike from Fira to Oia, afternoon in Oia, sunset at Imerovigli.
3. Day 3: caldera boat trip and hot springs, afternoon at Vlychada beach.
4. Day 4: Akrotiri and Red Beach, a winery visit, final dinner in Pyrgos.
With a week, add two beach days in Perissa and a ferry day trip to Ios or Naxos.
Common mistakes
- Paying for a view you never use because your days are spent on the beach.
- Visiting for too little time. A one-day cruise stop only shows Fira and Oia at their most crowded.
- Arriving late for sunset in July and August, when railing spots fill an hour ahead.
- Flimsy footwear on the caldera hike and the hot black sand.
- Relying on taxis. There are few of them and evening queues are long.
- Forgetting a water bottle. Tap water isn't for drinking, so you'll go through several litres a day.
Who Santorini suits
Santorini is made for couples, photographers and anyone who wants scenery and great food with short transfers. If you mainly want long sandy beaches and water parks, Crete or Rhodes gives better value. For nightlife, Ios and Mykonos win.
