Beaches and swimming

This is the clearest difference. Tenerife has real, wide sandy beaches: Playa de las Vistas, Playa del Duque and the black-sand Playa Jardín in the north. The beach is a short walk from the hotel and a sunbed needs no planning.

Madeira is not a classic beach destination. Swimming spots are shaped by lava: the natural pools of Porto Moniz, the black sand of Seixal and the coves at Garajau. For a proper sandy beach you take the ferry (about 2.5 hours) or a short flight to Porto Santo.

If the point of the trip is lying on sand, choose Tenerife. If swimming is a pleasant extra, Madeira is plenty.

Hiking and sights

Tenerife's crown jewel is Teide, Spain's highest peak at 3,715 m. The cable car reaches 3,555 m, and the final PNT 10 summit trail requires a reservation via Tenerife ON.
