Cruise Guide 2026 — Prices, Cabins and Best Routes

What does a cruise really cost and which cabin should you book? Compare the Baltic, Mediterranean and Caribbean, plus the hidden extras first-timers miss.

A cruise is an easy way to see several destinations without repacking, but the pricing is complicated: the advertised fare rarely matches the final bill. This guide explains what makes up the cost of a cruise and which route suits whom.

CaribbeanDecember–April7–14 daysHigh, due to flightsBeach holidays

A short Baltic cruise is the cheapest way to try cruising, because you board without flying. In the Mediterranean, shoulder-season prices drop noticeably and the port cities are calmer.

What is included — and what is not

The fare usually includes the cabin, meals in the main restaurants, the buffet, entertainment, pools and the gym.

    It usually does not include:

    - A drinks package or individual drinks
    - À la carte restaurants
    - Shore excursions
    - Gratuities, i.e. the daily service charge (often about 12–20 € per person per day)
    - Wi-Fi, spa and laundry
    - Flights and port transfers

Always calculate the total with these included. In practice the advertised starting fare can grow by 30–60 percent once the extras are added.

A balcony is worth it especially in the Norwegian fjords and on long sea days. On a Mediterranean city cruise you are ashore almost all day, so an inside cabin is enough for most. Lower midship decks move the least.

Example budget: a 7-day Mediterranean cruise

    ItemEstimate / person
    Cruise fare (inside cabin)about 600–900 €
    Service chargesabout 85–140 €
    Flights from Finlandabout 150–350 €
    Shore excursions (3)about 150–250 €
    Drinks and extrasabout 100–250 €
    Totalabout 1,100–1,900 €

You can often arrange shore excursions yourself for less when the port is within walking distance of the centre. In that case make sure you are back in time — the ship will not wait for independent travellers.

A balcony pays off especially on long sea days and fjord cruises.

    Seasickness, families and solo travellers

For seasickness, choose a lower midship cabin, watch the horizon and take pharmacy remedies. Modern ships are steady thanks to stabilisers, but the Bay of Biscay and open-sea legs can still roll.

Families are best served by large family ships with kids' clubs and water parks. For solo travellers the single supplement often raises the price by 50–100 percent; some lines have dedicated single cabins that are worth hunting for. The basics of travelling alone are covered in our complete solo travel guide.

    Insurance, documents and connectivity

Check that your travel insurance covers cruising and every country you call at — see our comparison in travel insurance 2026. Verify passport validity and any visas well in advance with passport, ETIAS and visas.

Onboard Wi-Fi is expensive and slow. A cheaper solution is an eSIM that works in port — see the comparison in eSIM for travel. Remember that cruise lines restrict bringing your own alcohol, and airline cabin bag dimensions are listed in carry-on size guide.

How to save on a cruise

    - Book either very early or at the very last minute
    - Pick a shoulder-season month
    - Depart from a port with cheap flights
    - Consider a drinks package only if you drink more than 4–5 drinks a day
    - Do shore excursions independently where the centre is walkable

    Tips for your first cruise

Bring a small daypack, swimwear and a light jacket — ship interiors are often heavily air-conditioned. Download the cruise line's own app while still in port, because it shows the daily programme and dining times without paid onboard internet. Check the size of the daily service charge on your booking confirmation, as it is billed to the cabin every day and usually cannot be removed. Keep medication, chargers and a change of clothes in your hand luggage, since checked suitcases often reach the cabin only a couple of hours after departure.
